Freedom Toddlers “Starfish”

Freedom Day Care Nursery

& Pre-School

Starfish Class ages 2-3 years - Our 2-3 year olds room is called Starfish.  This room is full of light, colourful and welcoming.  Children can make new friends, explore and choose from a variety of activities and toys. The atmosphere is encouraging and supportive and there is always someone smiling and happy to help, when little hands need it.

To keep it interesting for our young explorers, the toys within the room are rotated on a weekly basis. We play in small group activities at a stage appropriate to our development.

Each child is monitored, supported and encouraged through every developmental stage.  At the end of the nursery day, a member of our team will run through your Daily Diary sheet and talk about our day of adventures and activities.

Our Starfish Ethos - is give our toddlers fun, colourful and inspiring areas where they can enjoy learning and playing in small groups.  Each area focuses on a different learning goal, from numeracy to role play and all that we do is aimed to provide encouragement to all our children.

Our learning programme includes both free-play and adult directed activities, supporting and encouraging our Starfish through every developmental stage with activities that address all their needs in readiness for joining School.

Our Starfish team - Supervisor: Rhona McShane. Our Starfish room has qualified and well-trained staff, Yvette Brown, Georgie Caton, Sophie Reid & Rachael Monk who care for and nurture your child while providing stimulating and interesting activities. Throughout the year all staff are offered opportunities for personal and professional development, allowing them to update their knowledge continuously. Practical courses such as First Aid and Food Safety are also undertaken regularly.

Our Welcome Policy - We have a “Key Person” system that ensures that you and your child  know who is responsible for them throughout their time at Freedom.

We want involve the family and ‘home’ as much as possible into nursery life, so when you first come to us we will make sure you are introduced to our team. Our team will:

•Welcoming your child into nursery upon arrival for each session

•Looking after your child’s every need whilst in their care, including lots of cuddles

•Making written progress reports in their daily diary as well as giving verbal feedback to parents

•Supervising the table at meal times and encouraging good table manners

•Providing a wide variety of activities and experiences to encourage your child’s development

•Undertaking written development profiles and a Learning Journey of your child’s learning journey, capturing special moments on camera for keepsakes and referencing those points to the Development Matters relevant progress to their age

At the end of the nursery day, a member of our team will report to you on the activities and adventures your baby has enjoyed during their session.

Within the Starfish Room - We have Mark makingThe children have free access to crayons and pencils and paper, so you can expect lots of fun pictures and expressive art coming home, as we explore with our hands holding pencils and making our mark on paper  Art, Craft and Messy Area Here the children engage in art activities using paint, paper, clay and playdough, and create wonderfully expressive models, or dabble in sand and water play.  Role Play Area - This is a special space where children have the opportunity to dress up and play mummy’s and daddy’s, cook in the play kitchen and generally have fun using their imagination. Waterplay Playing with coloured water and different water activities, is always fun in our water tray. Music - The children frequently enjoy lively, fun-filled music time together – playing instruments and singing along to music in the room – we introduce numbers and letters in our songs and have a nursery song book which parents can take home and sing along as a family. Reading corner – many musical and noisy books, soft play books, books to encourage toddler eyes Natural exploration table – touching and experiencing a number of items found in daily life ICT The children are introduced to computers during fun story and song-time. Its an engaging activity and the bright colours and interactive programs for toddlers are always very popular.  Outside play, the gardens -We use our gardens a great deal, using the outside as much as we can for painting, drawing and exploring our outside world.  We play with the sand-tray, toddler trampolines, tricycles, ride-ons and more.  We also have a smooth surface playground where the children can again ride bicycles and cars, wheel dolls prams, play hop-scotch, draw on the chalk-boards and exploring the play house – this area helps us in wet weather too.

Self Registration and Circle Time Starfish children are encouraged to find their own name on the board and post their names in the red post box every morning and afternoon, this is a fun moment that you can do when you drop of your child, before saying goodbye.  During the morning and afternoon session, we sit together for “Circle Time” in our Groups. Circle Time is when we talk about various subjects and listen to each other, talking about home and our weekend, our topic of the week and other conversations, lead by the children.

Settling in Sessions  -  We support and encourage flexible settling-in sessions.  We offer a free session to give your toddler a taster of how much fun nursery can be. If you and your toddler are then happy with us, we invite you back for a “pre-start” session to enable you and your key person to get acquainted.

We like parents to feel involved and included in nursery life, so this settling-in time also offers opportunity for you to share with us anything you feel would benefit your toddler in settling in to nursery.

Bathroom & potty training – Our bathrooms for the children all have colourful walls and helpful pictures of cleaning and washing, to supplement verbal reminders and promote hygiene at an early age.  We have a selection of potties and toilet seats to encourage the children, so when it comes to potty training please speak to our team and they will happily work through a plan to suit your child’s individual needs.

Learning Journey & CurriculumThe Starfish Room follow a curriculum loosely based around topics like ‘food’, ‘light and dark’ &‘people who help us’.  We celebrate all languages, religions and special days throughout the year. All these topics are then linked with age related activities, to encourage the children to learn through play & fun, with lots of encouragement.

All children have a Learning Journey. This scrapbook follows them through nursery and pre-school, containing samples of artwork, photos and observations which is always available for you to look at on a daily basis and will be given to you as a memento of your child’s time with us when they leave.

The Learning Journey links to Ofsted Guidlines and the Early Years Outcomes, which specifically guides settings on the developmental needs and stages of babies and children.  This scrap book is to be shared by nursery, pre-school and very importantly you at home. It will also be looked at by your Primary School when your little one comes to starting at the age of 5yrs+.

If you have special trips and photographs that you can share with us, please ask for your book, take it home and pop anything of interest in it.

We hope you and your family enjoy your time at Freedom and once again....a very warm welcome from Jules, Kath and all the Freedom Team! Please ask any questions you may have of us all, we are happy help.
